Christmas is over, and we sure hope you got everything you wanted. If you didn’t, don’t worry your pretty lil’ heads about it because we still have a million things going on that will make you just as happy as finding that Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle behind that desk (okay, so I may have gotten sucked in to the Christmas Story marathon for a solid 6 hours… or more). For starters, we still have all the HIGH FOR THE HOLIDAYS shows in full swing, and (if you read this in the next hour or so) we’re showing A CHRISTMAS STORY one last time with a ROAST DUCK & MORE FEAST! Lastly, New Year’s Eve is in a few days. New Year’s plans are the hardest to make for me, so we’ve narrowed down your options…

:: FEATURED EVENTS AT THE ALAMO RITZ ::
- A CHRISTMAS STORY: Roast Duck N’ More Feast! -
: Alamo Ritz : Sunday, Dec 28 :
Think about the double dog dare, the Chinese caroling, the Red Ryder bb gun, those creepy elves and of course that “fra-jee-lay” Italian imported leg lamp. There is more timeless iconography packed into this perfect little gem than any other Christmas film since the birth of Jesus. Included with your ticket is a multi-course meal themed to A CHRISTMAS STORY, including mashed potatoes and Chinese roast duck. The mashed potato course will be served exactly when it hits the table for Ralphy, and we encourage each and every one of you to snort along and enjoy your plate just like the piggy does. See the menu HERE.
- High for the Holidays: POOTIE TANG -
: Alamo Ritz : Sunday, Dec 28 : Monday, Dec 29 :
This Holiday season, come together at the Ritz to celebrate Pootie by indulging in an ice-cold Pootie’s Malt Liquor or to kapa-chow down on a mouth-watering, fast-foodified Pootie’s Bad-Time Burger while watching Pootie sine pitties all over the Alamo screen. Louis C.K.’s cult classic put back where it should be…in theaters! Merry Christmas to all you tine Tanies! Sah dah tay!
- High For The Holidays / Music Monday: WONDERWALL -
: Alamo Ritz : Monday, Dec 29 :
The head-tripping surreal madness of Joe Massot’s WONDERWALL tells the tale of an eccentric scientist (Jack MacGowran) who stumbles upon a secret window into the sex life of gorgeous nymph (and longtime Serge Gainsbourg muse) Jane Birkin. Overflowing with psychedelic flashbacks, dream sequences and plenty of free love, the classic film features a shimmering, sitar-laced instrumental soundtrack by former Beatle George Harrison. An outrageous journey back to the Age of Altered Consciousness. Get to the theater early for a Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg Preshow!
- High For The Holidays: DARKSIDE OF THE RAINBOW -
: Alamo Ritz : Tuesday, Dec 30 :
Did Pink Floyd intend to synch up the Dark Side of the Moon with the classic the WIZARD OF OZ? Some say VCRs were $10000 at that time and it would be impossible to synch a phonograph to the film, change sides on the album and keep synch. Regardless, come to the Alamo, get properly stimulated and maybe bring some earplugs, because when the tin man’s heart is thumping to the heartbeats in Eclipse (track 9), we’d like you to feel it in your chest as well.
- High For The Holidays: BEERFEST with BEERLYMPICS! -
: Alamo Ritz : Tuesday, Dec 30 :
How did this film become an Alamo holiday tradition? When brothers Todd and Jan Wolfhouse travel to Germany to spread their grandfather’s ashes at Oktoberfest, they stumble upon a centuries old underground beer games competition — “Beerfest,” the secret Olympics of beer drinking. To be honest, we can never really remember the ending because we’re always trying to keep up with the drinking onscreen. We’re starting this show with live Beerlympics, featuring Beer Pong and great food and beer specials!
- AFTER THE THIN MAN New Year’s Eve Party! -
: Alamo Ritz : Wednesday, Dec 31 :
The response to our first Cinema Cocktails screenings of the classic screwball romantic mystery THE THIN MAN was so great that we just knew we had to return to the wonderful chemistry of Nick and Nora Charles, their adorable dog Asta, their crime-solving savvy and, maybe best of all, their love of distilled spirits. In addition to the film itself, we’ll be serving a multi-course feast, enjoying a champagne toast after a countdown to midnight that could only be done by the Alamo, and more!
- THE BIG LEBOWSKI with WHITE RUSSIANS -
: Alamo Ritz : Thursday, Jan 1 :
The Coen Brothers have described THE BIG LEBOWSKI as their Raymond Chandler story, and it contains all the trappings of the author’s hardboiled mystery novels, including the alcohol. Secondly, as a bowling-themed comedy, liquor is a given. Finally and most importantly, THE BIG LEBOWSKI is the ultimate movie for White Russian fans. The Dude fuels his detective work with numerous helpings the sweet drink, which he often refers to as “Caucasians.” As long as there is ‘half and half’ dripping from his mustache, the Dude abides. (Booze Movies)

:: FEATURED EVENTS AT THE ALAMO SOUTH LAMAR ::
- THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON -
: Alamo South Lamar : Now Playing :
David Fincher and Brad Pitt team up for a third time with this adaptation of a F. Scott Fitzgerald short story. Pitt plays a man who is born 80 years old, but instead of aging, he grows young. Oscar winner Cate Blanchett costars, along with Taraji P. Henson and Tilda Swinton. “The film represents a richly satisfying serving of deep-dish Hollywood storytelling. This odd, epic tale of a man who ages backwards is presented in an impeccable classical manner, every detail tended to with fastidious devotion.” – Todd McCarthy, Variety
- BEDTIME STORIES -
: Alamo South Lamar : Now Playing :
Adam Sandler stars as a man whose nighttime tales do more than just put his nephew to sleep; instead, his imaginative stories become reality. This fantasy comedy for the whole family is directed by HAIRSPRAY helmer Adam Shankman.
- THE SPIRIT -

Down these mean streets a man must come. A hero born, murdered, and born again… Rookie cop Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces in Central City. Based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller (creator of 300 and Sin City) and starring Samuel L. Jackson as “The Octopus,” Eve Mendes as “Sand Seref,” and Scarlett Johansson as “Silken Floss.”
- DOUBT -

Set in 1964, Doubt centers on a nun who confronts a priest after suspecting him abusing a black student. He denies the charges, and much of the play’s quick-fire dialogue tackles themes of religion, morality and authority. Starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams.

:: FEATURED EVENTS AT THE ALAMO VILLAGE ::
- YES MAN -
: Alamo Village : Now Playing :
This film marks the triumphant return of Jim Carrey to comedy! With Peyton Reed (MR. SHOW, UCB) in the director’s chair, YES MAN guarantees to be brilliantly sharp, with just enough drops of nonsense to make it fun for laughers of all thresholds. Oh, and if you’re one of the approximately 80 million people who currently has a total crush on Zooey Deschanel, she’s in the film too.
- MARLEY AND ME -
: Alamo Village : Now Playing :
John Grogan’s bestselling book about his Labrador retriever bounds onto the screen with MARLEY AND ME. Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston star as a couple who adopts the badly behaved but much-loved dog.
- VALKYRIE -
: Alamo Village : Now Playing :
Just in time for Christmas comes the most anticipated, heartwarming film ever made about the attempted assassination of Adolf Hitler! Helmed by the mighty Bryan Singer (USUAL SUSPECTS, X-MEN, SUPERMAN RETURNS) and starring Tom Cruise with an even mightier eye-patch, this true tale of treason and revenge is destined for acclaim-town. Best part- no fake German accents.
In the midst of all the Fantastic Fest ‘08 insanity, a very rare and exciting event quietly slipped in and packed the Alamo Ritz with adoring fans. We were lucky enough to present a cast screening of the mighty Walter Hill rock n’ roll action epic STREETS OF FIRE with stars Michael Pare and Deborah Van Valkenburgh LIVE! As if that wasn’t enough, they also took the stage along with director Albert Pyun and the other creators of the semi-official SOF sequel ROAD TO HELL, which had its world premiere theatrical screening!
To top it all off, this epic event was presided over by legendary Alamo programmer/Music Monday creator (and STREETS OF FIRE fan # 1) Kier-la Janisse, who’s since moved away from our nation, but was definitely back in fine form to bring the stars of her favorite movie to the stage.
It was an incredible and unexpectedly heart-warming event, and those of you who weren’t there can still feel the magic via THIS SET OF PICTURES from Austin photomaster David Hill!

Last week, Salon ran an essay by some woman who doesn’t like summer. She gets all whiny about “feeling this pressure to go out and enjoy myself.” WTF? That’s why summer RULES! You can go out and spend the day in the sun, cool off by breaking into a nearby apartment complex’s pool, then spend the night watching the biggest and most explosive movies of the year!
What more could you possibly want out of a season than Will Ferrell comedies (STEP BROTHERS opens this week at the Village!), superhero movies (THE DARK NIGHT and HANCOCK are still saving the day at the Ritz, Lamar, and Village), and a little bit of light summer fun to wash it all down with (if you haven’t seen MAMMA MIA! at Lamar yet, you owe it to yourself)?
Summer is perfect. Especially *this* summer. Keep drinking it in.

FEATURED EVENTS AT THE ALAMO RITZ
- THE DARK KNIGHT -
: Alamo Ritz, Lamar & Village : Now Playing :
Did you see it yet???? It’s SOOOOOO good! I can already tell that I am going to watch and rewatch this movie in a way that I haven’t done since Beetlejuice first came out and I was in junior high. Also! GET THE BAT WINGS APP SPECIAL. Trust me on that one.
- MASTER PANCAKE THEATER mauls CATWOMAN -
: Alamo Ritz : Fri & Sat : July 25 & 26 :
Getting Harvey Dent and the Joker and Batman and Gordon to play around on screen is nice, but what about everyone’s favorite Batman “love interest” from the TV series and comics? Fortunately, Catwoman had her own movie a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, it’s kind of HORRIBLE. But this is *definitely* one of the So-Horrible-You-Have-To-See-It movies, in other words, the absolute perfect fodder for the boys of Master Pancake Theater and their patented movie-mockery. And because I can’t help myself – this show is sure to be purrrrr-fect! (And seriously, that’s how Halle Berry talks in the movie – awesome!)
- $2 Music Monday: WESLEY WILLIS’ JOYRIDES -
: Alamo Ritz : Mon, July 28 :
A portrait of the self proclaimed rock ‘n’ roll star and “Chicago City Artist” Wesley Willis. Despite impossible odds, Chicago native Wesley Willis became an underground rock icon, revered artist and hero to many before his untimely death in 2003. Through his force of personality and artistic talents, Wesley’s music and art attracted people from all walks of life. This excellent film, constructed from many years of interviews and candid footage, follows the prolific artist on his journey from obscurity to fame. It was one of our favorite films at SXSW this year and we can’t wait to see it again.

FEATURED EVENTS AT THE ALAMO SOUTH LAMAR
- MAMMA MIA! -
: Alamo South Lamar : Now Playing :
If you spent all of last week watching THE DARK KNIGHT, treat yourself to something utterly light this weekend with the film Slate calls, “delightfully dorky,” and for good reason. Because is the idea of a musical movie set to the tunes of ABBA a dorky thing to pursue? Heck yes. But that’s precisely why it’s so much fun.
- Free Kids Club: GOOD BURGER -
Honestly, this movie is WWWAAAYYYY funnier than you’d expect it to be…an endless array of genuinely intelligent sight gags and goofball characters. If you like laughing and/or burgers, this is a show you can’t miss. Really!
- AFS Essential Cinema: THE BAND’S VISIT -
When an Egyptian police orchestra gets lost on its way to a performance in Israel, the band and their stoic leader wind up far from home in an obscure Israeli village. Lightly approaching the political issues that surround the band’s visit, this charming, heartfelt comedy shows how people of all cultures share the trials of friendship and romance.

FEATURED EVENTS AT THE ALAMO VILLAGE
- STEP BROTHERS -
: Alamo Village :Opens Friday, July 25 :
Ferrell and Reilly play Brennen and Dale, two fully-grown, unemployed only-children who become sudden step brothers when Brennen’s mom (Mary Steenbergen) marries Dale’s dad (Richard Jenkins). As their narcissism and downright aggressive laziness threaten to tear the family apart, these two middle-aged boys will orchestrate an insane, elaborate plan to bring their parents back together.
: Alamo South Lamar : Tues, July 29 :
: Alamo South Lamar : Mon – Thurs :
For our Inaugural Music Monday missive, The Decoder Ring here in Austin brings us a beautiful Triptych for the Alamo Drafthouse’s screening of the Talking Heads’ concert film “Stop Making Sense!” Featuring lyrics from ‘Life During Wartime’ across all 3 prints. These are printed by The Decoder Ring, signed and numbered, and measure 20×26 each!
Available for a VERY short time at Mondo Tees, these posters are printed in VERY small numbers, making it some of the rarest we’ve ever done! Check out detail below-
It’s been a good week so far. We’re all pretty worn out from SXSW and we came to work yesterday knowing we have a giant slate of events to look forward to. Yesterday was a pretty auspicious start.
The great Steve Buscemi stopped by to say hi to the crowd after our MILLER’S CROSSING feast. Steve Buscemi walking into the Alamo is like Shatner and Nimoy walking into a Star Trek convention. The audience went INSANE, yelling BOOOOO-SHIMMY!!! And according to Zack, he hung around to talk to everyone in the lobby afterwards, so – Steve Buscemi – nice guy. Watch this space for more about the surprise Buscemi appearance from Tim and Zack.
I wasn’t there because I was down at the Ritz for the Music Monday presentation of the great doc PIED PIPER OF HUTZOVINA. Gogol Bordello leader Eugene Hutz was kind enough to stop by and introduce the film. He was very friendly, a great introducer, and an all-around good guy. He freaked out when he saw the Heavy Metal style Herzog shirt at Mondo Tees and he had to have it right away. On our way back to Stubbs we talked about Spaghetti Westerns a lot. He’s a huge fan of Sergio Corbucci and DJANGO in particular! Thanks to Graham Williams of Transmission entertainment for putting us in touch with his folks.
Today, we are super excited about having Bud Cort in for three shows. HAROLD AND MAUDE is all sold out but there are a few seats left for the 7pm BREWSTER MCCLOUD (My favorite) and at midnight we’ll be screening Bud’s directorial debut, TED AND VENUS. Please join us if you can.
The icing on the cake today has been this slashfilm post that Matt Dentler sent us. Apparently Peter Sciretta likes our theaters. Thanks for all the kind words. We’ll keep working hard at it.
Take a look at my Flickr set and you will notice three things: 1) That back section of roof is completely gone. 2) The elevator shaft is completely built . And 3) The concrete floor is completely poured.
Now, what you can’t see from the current set is that steel has arrived (it got there on Friday) and the builders are currently in the process of constructing the interior steel structures. Separately, both Tim and Daniel told me that once that steel is in place, things are really going to speed up.
Another interesting thing happened yesterday, as a matter of fact. As you may or may not know, Austin Mayor Will Wynn gave a lecture on global warming at the Alamo Downtown. I chatted with Tim right before the Mayor’s lecture and he looked a little nervous. “I’m meeting with the Mayor after this show,” he told me. I’m not privy to the exact subject of their discussion, but I know it involved utilities and the Ritz. I walked through the lobby at one point as the two were meeting and thought I overheard an encouraging remark from the Mayor (”encouraging” in the sense that it might be a good thing for the Ritz). Sorry I wasn’t a better fly on the wall, but I was on the clock and figured that I probably shouldn’t have feigned playing a video game right next to them so as to eavesdrop.
On another note, before this meeting Tim told me they weren’t exactly where he had hoped they would be in the building process. He had planned on the steel being done by this coming Tuesday, but apparently that isn’t going to happen. If seeing the two cutting a hole in the ceiling last week is any indication, perhaps we’ll see Tim and Daniel hauling steel girders next week; One of the reasons they cut that hole themselves was in order to speed up the construction of the elevator shaft.
Fun fact: You’ve seen the elevator that we have downtown, right (picture to the left)? Well, it seems the service elevator at the Ritz is going to be more like the real deal, with a sliding door and (maybe) lights that indicate what floor it is on! It will have three stops (lobby, mezzanine, and projection booth). You may be wondering why I’m excited about a new elevator. Well, if you’ve ever had the pleasure of cranking someone up who got stuck in the downtown elevator, you’d understand. In fact, there was one guy who used to come regularly to music Monday and, wouldn’t you know, every single time he’d take that elevator up, it would break down on him. I haven’t seen him in a long time, but I’m sure he’s gonna be as excited about that new elevator as I am.
Kind of funny that it worked out that way – but in a way it also proves that after ten years of business, expansion and change, we still haven’t lost sight of the Alamo’s original goal: to provide eclectic and challenging programming, and to present it in the most fun way imaginable for a large audience to enjoy.
Music Monday & Emos present:
EL DUCE VITA: THE MENTORS DVD RELEASE
WITH DR. HEATHEN SCUM AND SICKIE WIFEBEATER IN PERSON!
MONDAY APRIL 2 – 9:45pm – ALAMO DOWNTOWN
See the TRAILER and buy tickets HERE
This long-awaited first Mentors DVD is compiled from hours and hours of archival footage. The Mentors – formed in 1976 by Guitarist Sickie Wifebeater (Eric Carlson), Bassist Dr. Heathen Scum (Steve Broy), and the immortal Drummer / Singer El Duce (Eldon Hoke, RIP) – were never ones to shy from controversy, shamelessly billing themselves as the inventors of ‘Rape Rock’: early 1970s-style heavy metal with extremely sexist lyrics. This DVD – which will be for sale at a special price following the screening – contains live performances from the band in its prime as well as some of their concept videos for their hit songs “Golden Showers”, “Donkey Dick”, “On the Rag” and more!!!
PLUS! See the MENTORS live at EMOs after the screening! Combo tickets available on the alamo site HERE that include both the screening and the live show!
(note: Due to the cost of bringing in guests, this screening is slightly higher admission than usual for the Music Mondays series – $5/$4 students/heroes, and $13/$12 for the combo tickets)
——————–
After repeated success with bands like Cry Blood Apache, and DJs like Toddy B and Trey Lopez etc. , Music Mondays at the Alamo Downtown is considering making it a regular thing to have live music before the movies. Because it’s a discount series, there’s no cash payment, but bands will be given free food and beer, a guest list and Alamo passes. Anyone who’s interested, please email Kier-La (kier-la@originalalamo.com) a link to your website or MySpace or anywhere she can find music samples, so that she can match you up with an appropriate film. Thanks!
