The TALK OF THE TOWN Feast!
|
| Hello Food & Film Friends! For one very rare 35mm screening of George Stevens’ last comedy with Cary Grant, the Alamo chefs will prepare an even rarer feast inspired by the golden age of Hollywood!
Check out the menu! I II III IV About the film: Stevens’ entertaining romantic triangle, in which the atmosphere of legal debate is leavened by wit, and low comedy, is brilliantly played by all, especially an atypically dark and impulsive Grant. The director’s characteristically deft touch with comic business is evident throughout the film. Hope to see you there! You can get your tickets here. Thanks! John |

We generally don’t like to get all political here, because TEAM AMERICA’s skewering of entertainment types thinking they should butt in and try to change the world is too perfect. But without delving into the whole sexism versus racism thing that the pundits are turning this year’s presidential race into, we do have one issue that we’ve been supporting – the movement to Stop the Domain Subsidies. This is a local issue, and one that people on both sides of our city’s aisle can look at objectively, so that’s all we’re going to ask you to do. Check out the video and information available at StopDomainSubsidies.com, and whatever you decide is best for the version of the city you want to live in, vote for it one way or another this fall. Okay, enough soap boxing. Let’s get to the fun!
::FEATURED EVENTS AT THE ALAMO RITZ::

- Big Screen Sci-Fi Classics: TRON -
: Alamo Ritz : Sept 8, 9 & 11
Attention all Users! Follow us back to a beautiful page in history, before computer games required a two-week vacation from work and digitally-generated special effects were the new star of Hollywood. When the visual magic of TRON hit the screen in 1982, every jaw in the world hit the theater floors. And for our money, CGI hasn’t been this good since.
- Fantastic Fest and aGLIFF present ROOM OF DEATH -
: Alamo Ritz : Mon, Sept 8 :
“I saw ROOM OF DEATH at the Berlin Film Market and REALLY liked it. Strange, tense, gruesome, occasionally funny and containing a sexually-charged lesbian taxidermy plot thread, ROOM OF DEATH was PERFECT for Fantastic Fest. The timing just didn’t work out, however, so we opted for the next best thing. We have partnered with our pals at the Austin Gay and Lesbian Film Festival to bring the film to Austin early.” – Tim League
- Cinema Cocktails: LEGEND OF THE DRUNKEN MASTER -
: Alamo Ritz : Sept 9 & 10
Easily at the peak of relentless kung fu cinematic intensity, DRUNKEN MASTER is considered by many action enthusiasts to be the shining star of the kickin’-and-punchin’ genres, and with good reason. Whether he’s doing a triple flip onto actual flaming coals or wobbling into battle against an entire army, Jackie is 200-proof and 100% UNSTOPPABLE! - The BILLY MADISON Back-To-School Quote-Along -

- The DISCO INFERNO Sing-Along -
: Alamo Ritz :Thurs, Sept 11 :
We’ve collected all the best videos and live performances of disco superstars from the true era of excess, then mixed them up with the dance jams of the ’80s and ’90s and just a taste of the ’00s as well, so this evening will be a little bit like a history lesson, tracing the samples from songs in Jiggy Crunk back to their original source, then seeing how they inspired dances later. But it’s a history lesson fueled by singing and dancing and drinking, so it’s not like that other school stuff AT ALL. It’s just old school.
Plus! Winners of our costume and dance contest will receive tickets to this year’s Fun Fun Fun fest!

The always lovable Owen Egerton will be debating the resolution, “The US penny should be removed from circulation” against venerable Austin improv icon Les McGehee. When Dale witnesses a murder and the murderers witness Dale witnessing them murder, Dale and Saul gets swept up in an epic cat ‘n mouse action/stoner/buddy/gang-warfare riot that never comes down from its high.

This amazing print turns every expectation on its head. Replacing the traditional pic of Arnie with Hamilton’s Sarah Connor, this is probably the first time ever the HERO of the Terminator films (at least the 1st two) has taken center stage in a Terminator poster. The red glowing laser target dead center, indicating her as a marked woman…my colleague here at the shop called the whole thing “Haunting”.
And returning design concern, The Print Mafia, brings us a print for quite possibly THE BEST MOVIE EVER, Rolling Thunder! (Terror Thrusday guru, Zack Carlson said this film will give me a new religion…we’ll see, Zack…but being a Shaker has been fine for me so far.)
This print is absolutely GINORMOUS at 26×38. 3 colors and printed at D and L screenprinting.
Both posters are $30.00 each and available right now and for a limited time only at www.mondotees.com!
There are probably a lot of people who start feeling a bit tired of giant CGI explosions around this time of year and start longing for a bit of humanity in their movies. Subtlety, wit, real humor – that kind of stuff. This summer, BAGHEAD may be just the ticket. And we’ve got it all week at the Alamo South Lamar.
“BAGHEAD is like a blast of fresh air. It has warmth and innovation, and the mischievous good sense to subtly make fun of the type of film that it is.”–Cinematical
“A youthful tale of friendship and romantic longing boosted by the appearance of a menacing figure with a bag over his head. Seldom has genre been this warm and fuzzy. BAGHEAD is funny, a little scary but always honest.”–indieWIRE.com
Directors Mark and Jay Duplass (THE PUFFY CHAIR) return to Austin with a hilarious, tongue-in-cheek, genre-twisting comedy that explores the minutiae of relationship dynamics among a group of desperate actor friends and roasts a gamut of indie films in the process.
After attending the Los Angeles Underground Film Festival premiere of the lauded indie film WE ARE NAKED, Chad, Katherine, Matt, and Michelle are desperate to launch their flailing careers by writing their own script, casting themselves in juicy star roles. That night they impulsively drive up to Matt’s uncle’s cabin in Big Bear, but horny ulterior motives upstage the boozy brainstorming session of good ideas for their unborn hit film. The foursome do get something out of their mumbling weekend in the woods, and it’s something that far exceeds their expectations.
In addition there will be an outdoor premiere on Thursday night with the Duplass Brothers in person. Click here for details. Here are some clips from the film:

We certainly have a plethora of special events coming your way this week, and with the summer blockbuster season heating up with this Thursday’s release of IRON MAN, we figured this would be a good time to debut a new weekly blog series – the THIS WEEK AT THE ALAMO series. We realize that some of you have graduated past emails and now exist solely on an RSS or Twitter feeds, so this series of entries will basically be here every week to take the information from the Alamo Guide email newsletter and repurpose it as a blog. You get to see more little pictures and showtimes grids if you read the email, but all of the other information about specialty shows we’re especially pysched for every week will be here in the THIS WEEK AT THE ALAMO blog entry. So here we go:
FEATURED SHOWS AND EVENTS AT THE ALAMO RITZ
- IRON MAN w/ SCOTCH FLIGHT -
: Alamo Ritz : Opens Thursday, May 1 :
In addition to being a skilled inventor and armor-clad warrior, Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, is also known to be quite the drinker. So at the Ritz we’re celebrating the release of IRON MAN with a special offering of a scotch flight – a full line of premium scotches delivered to your seat throughout the screening.
- MASTER PANCAKE: PLANET OF THE APES -
: Alamo Ritz : Fri, May 2 : Sat, May 3 :
“Damn you all to hell!” This April, Master Pancake reaches back to the 1960’s to mock the Charlton Heston classic Planet of the Apes (1968). Guest comedian Owen Egerton rejoins the cast to help mock the movie in which Charlton Heston plays against type: as a macho, chiseled-face everyman angrily fighting for survival in a world gone mad.
- BACKPACK PICNIC – DVD Release Party -
: Alamo Ritz : Sun, May 4 :
Backpack Picnic is the latest comedy troupe/flower to evolve/blossom from the creative minds/plants that fester/sprout in the brains/humus of Mitch Baker and David Bewley, who have been performing original comedy together for 11 years. Rene Pinnell joined the troupe when he directed their MTV pilot in 2005, and Shannon McCormick and Jeremy Lamb have been integral players since 2003. Though Backpack Picnic’s history is short, it comes from a long line of absurdist comedy incarnations dating back to HBO’s US Comedy Arts Festival in 2000.
- the THREE AMIGOS Feast-Along -
: Alamo Ritz : Mon, May 5 : 7pm :
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with the three of the funniest gringos to ever don sombreros with this special screening of THREE AMIGOS that will be part pinata party, part Quote-Along, and all glued together with a multilple course Mexican feast prepared by Ritz chef Trish Eichelberger. Just make sure your mouth isn’t full when you give the Three Amigos salute, cause you might choke yourself with that final pelvic thrust.
- AUSTIN ROCK BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008 -
: Alamo Ritz : Tues, May 6 : 10pm :
The first Austin Rock Band Championships were INSANE. An entire drunk band, rockers throwing equipment around on the stage as if they were real instruments, and George Romero leading an all zombie band of dead rockers are just some of the highlights. This week we’ll be back for more, and you can still sign up to compete or just come out for the spectacle. Either way, click here for more info.
- SPACEBALLS: THE MOVIE: THE QUOTE-ALONG -
: Alamo Ritz : Thurs, May 8 : 7pm :
Mel Brooks’ STAR WARS parody is soooo much more than just a parody film, and filled with the sorts of jokes that the writers of all the recently (and horribly) made “spoof films” wish they could dream up. And ever since the BLAZING SADDLES Quote-Along we did in the winter, we knew that we had to come back for more Mel. If your Schwartz is as big as mine, you’re probably uncomfortably excited with just the prospect of this show happening. Somewhere in space, Dot Matrix’s virgin alarm is ringing loudly.
- NEW WAVE SING-ALONG – FINAL SHOW -
: Alamo Ritz : Thurs, May 8 : 9:25pm :
We really haven’t been able to get enough of the New Wave Sing-Along, and so it’s with a sort of regret that we’re retiring this show for the time being. If you haven’t been out to this celebration of all things keytar and eyeliner, Thursday, May 8 will be your last chance, and you definitely don’t want to miss it.
- WHEN IS TOMORROW -
with Eddie “CRABMAN” Steeples live in person!
: Alamo Ritz : Sat, May 10 : Sun, May 11 :
“WHEN IS TOMORROW is a brilliantly acted and photographed example of how the low-budget, DIY aesthetic can compliment a story when told by people who know what they’re doing. BUFF alum Kevin Ford (People Are Dead, 2005) and Eddie Steeples (TV’s My Name Is Earl) are a joy to watch in every scene they occupy together-vividly bringing to life characters that are both hilarious and heartbreaking.”
- 2007 Boston Underground Film Festival
Plus, we’ll have live comedy from Eddie Steeples himself before the Saturday show!

All the pie, coffee and Amy’s Ice Cream you can eat is included in the $30 ticket price.
- the SPEED RACER Road Rally -
: Alamo South Lamar : Sat, May 10 :
Watching people race around a track never excited us until we saw the trailer for this new film from the Wachowski brothers. Now we feel the need for speed ourselves, and we’re putting together a photo-scavenger hunt and road rally that will send us all racing (within the posted speed limits, of course) all over Austin to get the best Speed Racer moments and momentos before we collapse with joy, stop driving, and start drinking while we watch the new SPEED RACER movie at the Alamo Lamar.
- BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S : The Mother’s Day Feast -
: Alamo South Lamar : Sunday, May 11 :
This Mothers Day we’ll have three big feasts for you to treat your Mom (or the mother of your kids) to. At South Lamar, Chef John Bullington and company will be bringing back an old favorite – BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S – as a special brunch feast with the most extravagant, urbane, and effortlessly sophisticated menu they can devise. And don’t worry, there will be enough bubbly to go around, and if your mom lives too far away, feel free to treat yourself and then just tell her about all the food you ate in her honor.

If you wondered why so many people were wandering around shaking their heads and muttering to themselves at Fantastic Fest last year, it’s probably because they had just seen a screening of the terrific, suspenseful thriller SPIRAL. This time HATCHET director Adam Green has taken on an all new challenge and once again he succeeds with edge-of-your-seat excitement.
And now, by popular demand, we are thrilled to bring it back for everyone to enjoy.

“A Hitch-cocktail of precision direction, deft pacing, startling imagery and clean style. The undercurrent of sly suspense never subsides in this teasing psychodrama packing a final shock punch.” Alan Jones, FrightFest
Portland in the fall is a solitary city. A city where a lonely man can lose himself, insulated beneath the cold, and the clouds, and the rain. Mason (Joel David Moore) is just such a man. A gifted artist, Mason is never-the-less neurotic and reclusive, living a life of anonymity, working from a drab cubicle in a florescent-lit phone bank, repeating the same meaningless conversation with faceless strangers ad nauseam.
Mason is never truly noticed by anyone, save his boss, Berkeley (Zachary Levi), not quite a friend, but a sole source of companionship in an otherwise isolated existence. That is, until he meets a gregarious co-worker named Amber (Amber Tamblyn), a girl struggling with her own loneliness and need to define herself. Amber’s jovial demeanor and seemingly carefree attitude provides a sort of catharsis for Mason, and allows his true gifts to come to light as she poses for his art.
It is an unlikely, and unusual courtship that helps Mason find peace for possibly the first time in his life. But as Mason’s defenses lower, and the man inside is revealed, there may be something behind the surface darker than anyone expected. For not everything that is hidden should be found, and not every love is meant to be. And you can’t paint over your past…
“THE BEST PICTURE OF THE YEAR. How can I choose this warm-hearted comedy about a pregnant teenager, when the year was rich with serious drama? I tried out other titles in the No. 1 position, but my heart told me I had to be honest: This was my true love, and I could not be unfaithful. It is so hard to make a great comedy at all, and harder still to make one that is intelligent, quick, charming, moving and yes, very, very funny. It begins with the pacing of a screwball comedy and it ends as a portrait of characters we have come to love. It is so very rare to sit with an audience that leans forward with delight and is in step with every turn and surprise of an uncommonly intelligent screenplay. It is so rare to hear laughter that is surprised, unexpected and delighted. So rare to hear it coming during moments of recognition, when characters reflect exactly what we’d be thinking, just a moment before we get around to thinking it. So rare to feel the audience joined into one warm, shared enjoyment. So rare to hear a movie applauded.”- Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
To celebrate Roger’s (and our) love of JUNO this week, Monday January 7 through Thursday January 10: the first 25 people seated at the late show of JUNO will receive a free package of orange Tic-Tacs. Trust us, you’re REALLY going to want those orange Tic-Tacs! If you’ve already seen JUNO and you want to bring a friend, these are the shows to come to!
