On its release last year I couldn't find much to fault Avatar on. But after watching Alice – the first serious CGI-dominated 3D film since James Cameron's immersive motion picture – there's now a glaring issue with it: the bar was set waaay too high. Previously the computer generated effects in Alice would have knocked your socks off, however in a post-Avatar world it significantly underwhelms. Not an overly fair statement for a film which has consistently beautiful and detailed images – take the awe-inspiring climactic clash which is set on a chess board-esquire battlefield for example – but you can thank Cameron for that. Once you get past the fact that Burton's creation does not aim to achieve realistic environments or creatures and that the actors will never appear to be anywhere other than in front of a green screen, you are in good stead to enjoy the colourful animation for what it was intended for: pure, undemanding, trippy wonderment.

Umm... Is the sandwich perhaps made with a soy-based sambal mayo, as opposed to traditional mayo that contains eggs? I'm thrilled to hear that there's a new vegan option at my favorite movie theatre, but sad to think it'll be one more thing that I have to order without a standard posted ingredient.

Well, we've had Sam Smith's Imperial Stout on the menu at Lamar for a few years now, a RIS considered by many to be one of the finest in the world. I think there's probably room on the menu for another, and Old Rasputin would certainly be in the frame for that, as would Oskar Blues Ten Fidy if only it wasn't a seasonal and if they'd send more than a couple of pallets to Austin each year. Rasputin would also be a candidate for the tap, after having put some age on it.

You don't see the 60min and 90min IPA names explained that much, nice to see it here.

Russian Imperial Stout is one my favorite styles too, how bout keeping one year round? A 12 oz bottle of Old Rasputin year round would make the worlds best movie beer palace perfect. I know, I know, there's only so much cooler space, but it's always good to dream.

Stouts and porters are among my favourite beers too - I can hardly think of a beer style that has as much depth and character as a Russian Imperial Stout but I have plenty of time for a hop bomb, as long as it's not OTT. There has to be some balance. Bitterness and uber-hoppiness just for its own sake really doesn't do it for me.

If you stick around until this time next year we'll be tapping some of the RIS and barley wine kegs that are currently stashed away in a little corner of the theatre. They should be pretty tasty by then.

I grew up in Bakersfield (1956-1971) and alternated my Saturdays between the Fox and the Tejon theaters. Such fond memories. I'm so sad to hear you couldn't bring it back to permanent life but honor you for trying. I can still taste the 5 cent Charms grape suckers during those Saturday matinees!

I've never intentionally aged 90 min but I have left one or two behind over time and I agree it's good but lacks the bite of a truly hoppy Ipa. Then again, hoppy ipas have never been my favorite thing (oh no he didn't), I'd much rather settle of some big rich ris or imperial porter to enjoy.
