Top Grossing Films of 2009 – Drafthouse Style

It’s always interesting to look at the end-of-year wrapups and see what the highest grossing movies of the year were.
NATIONAL TOP 2009 GROSSES
1. TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN
2. AVATAR
3. HARRY POTTER & THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE
4. UP
5. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON
6. THE HANGOVER
7. STAR TREK
8. THE BLIND SIDE
9. MONSTERS VS. ALIENS
10. ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS
Now look at what grossed the highest at our theaters. It’s a pretty different picture. 4 of the national top 10, including number one, don’t even appear on our top ten earners.
SOUTH LAMAR
1. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
2. STAR TREK
3. DISTRICT 9
4. HARRY POTTER & THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE
5. ZOMBIELAND
6. AVATAR in 3D
7. 500 DAYS OF SUMMER
8. WATCHMEN
9. UP
10. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY
VILLAGE
1. UP!
2. STAR TREK
3. INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
4. HARRY POTTER & THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE
5. MONSTERS VS ALIENS
6. TAKEN
7. AVATAR in 3D
8. TERMINATOR SALVATION
9. BRUNO
10. CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS
THE RITZ
1. THE HANGOVER
2. THE WRESTLER
3. BRUNO
4. INGLORIOUS BASTERDS
5. STAR TREK
6. FUNNY PEOPLE
7. EXTRACT
8. WHIP IT
9. DRAG ME TO HELL
10. SHERLOCK HOLMES
A few of the top performers for us were considered bombs or underperformers nationally (EXTRACT, BRUNO, WHIP IT). And while TRANSFORMERS and TWILIGHT did well for us, they weren’t as big a piece of the pie. Some of the big explosion-heavy blockbusters came and went while little movies like 500 DAYS kept going and going.
Hope to see all of you a lot in 2010 too. Thanks!

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is the national top grosser? that movie didn’t even have a story and if not for Megan Fox, it would have been just machines jumping over each other. Transformers was most over-rated movie of 2009. District 9 was beautiful though.

The Drafthouse is awesome, as apparently, are its customers. Hooray to no Transformers in the Top 10!
