THE ALAMO GUIDE
for December 10th, 2009
|
If you’re at the S. Lamar theater this weekend, and you see a bunch of groggy ass, smelly, crazy-looking people wandering out of the theater around noon on Sunday, don’t worry. They won’t hurt you, they will have just sat through a full 24 hours plus of movies and they’ll be in desperate need of sleep. I’ll be one of them. It’ll be awesomely exhausting! Aside from that, if you got tickets already (if not, toooo bad), you can see the folks from BROKEN LIZARD with their newest film THE SLAMMIN’ SALMON, but the most important thing that you should do is GO SEE BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS!!! Yes, the name is long, and the trailer makes it look kind of silly, but the hype over at Alamo Headquarters is ridiculous and the few people in our programming team that got to see it WENT BONKERS for it. Really. Check it out.If you’re planning on being hungry on the 20th, you should get tickets to the SECOND LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY HOBBIT FEAST that we added not too long ago! Also, we’re starting to pump out events for NEW YEAR’S EVE so you should get on that as well. FUN TIMES AHEAD!
Be sure to keep an eye on the Alamo Drafthouse Blog for up-to-date information and last minute awesomeness!

Opens Friday, December 11th at the Ritz
“Legendary director Werner Herzog has a lot of experience pushing
volatile actors over the top to get amazing performances, and his work with Nicolas Cage in BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS is among his best yet. While the poster and trailer promise a pretty run-of-the-mill cop thriller, the movie itself is an almost unbelievable exercise in excess. Cage really grabs the bull by the horns, playing the drug-addicted, seemingly doomed police detective with the kind of semi-lucid, self-loathing insanity rarely seen outside of clinical films documenting the violently insane. It’s fascinating and, most gratifyingly – it’s really, really funny. We are united in considering BAD LIEUTENANT the best and most unique film of the year.” - Tim League and the Alamo programming department.

Opens Dec. 11th at S. Lamar
Join Broken Lizard luminaries Jay Chandrasekhar, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske for an unforgettable night of no-holds-barred, fish-punching Q&A mayhem in the theater followed by some no-fish-held, bar-punching at the after-party!
“Easily the best work Broken Lizard has ever done.” – Joshua Tyler, Cinema Blend
In the latest comedy from Broken Lizard, (the creators of SUPER
TROOPERS and BEERFEST) “Slammin” Cleon Salmon (Michael Clarke Duncan) is a former Heavyweight Champion of the World turned celebrity owner of a high end Miami seafood restaurant, The Slammin’ Salmon.
A terrifying bull of a man, Salmon uses fear to rule over his misfit waitstaff (Broken Lizard’s Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske, as well as Cobie Smulders and April Bowlby) and on this particular night, he takes his bullying skills to a new level. In an effort to pay off a gambling debt to the Japanese Yakuza, Salmon sets up a contest to ‘inspire’ his waitstaff to sell more food than they ever have before: the top selling server wins $10,000 while the waiter in last place gets served with a broken rib sandwich- courtesy of the Champ himself.

Thurs., Dec. 10th & Sun., Dec. 13th at the Ritz
For the past four years, one of our favorite December traditions has
been the Christmas Pops Sing-Along, and every year this show just keeps getting better and better. In the beginning, it was a simple concept – we took music videos of pop stars singing their own Holiday Hits or, more frequently, their cover versions of classic carols (because that has got to be the easiest way to make money once you’re famous). The videos in the collection range from the sublime perfection of Wham’s “Last Christmas” to the hilariously horrendous version of “Jingle Bells” as sung by the Olsen twins when they were 8 years old (it has a rap breakdown in the middle, though, so you know it’s radical).
Prepare yourself for Rudolph Videoke (think karaoke but with acting), Christmas drink specials, dicks in boxes, renegade 6th St. caroling, and oh, so much more! |

JUST ADDED! Sunday, Dec. 13th at the Ritz
Fun and tasty prizes provided by Flipnotics Coffee Space Cafe!
“Santa! I know him!! I know him!!!” Whether you love his antics or have grown tired of his schtick, you can’t help but absolutely love Will Ferrell as Buddy the Elf in this decade’s best new holiday classic by far. Join the Action Pack hosts at the Ritz this December for a
quote-along holiday party that’ll have you wishing you could walk in on Zooey Deschanel singing in the shower in real life (if you don’t wish that already). We’ll have the World’s Best Cup of Coffee on the menu, jingle bells in the audience, and a super special eating contest before the movie to get us all into the spirit. “Buddy the Elf, what’s your favorite color?” |
|
Opens Fri., Dec. 11th at S. Lamar
Richard Linklater’s new coming of age feature set in 1937 stars Disney teen throb Zac Efron (HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL), who stretches himself as an actor playing the young aspiring actor Richard who lands a job with Orson Welles (played by newcomer Christian McKay) and his legendary Mercury Theatre Company. The whirlwind experience of working with the boy genius and appearing in Welles’ soon-to-be groundbreaking production of Julius Caesar as Lucillus sets his life on a new course. In that same week, he also finds romance with older woman Sonja (Claire Danes). Experiencing romance and immersed into a creative process few are afforded, Richard also learns a few lessons about crossing swords with the imperious and brilliant Welles. He must grow up fast.

Due to the sometimes graphic language and nature of the show, the Christmas Show is not recommended for children.
Cool prizes and t-shirt design contest with Under Pressure Hands on Screen Shop!!
The beloved Alamo holiday tradition continues! It’s the famous
Christmas Clip Show featuring Master Pancake Theater! Join us as we channel surf A.D.D.-style through a blizzard of clips from your
favorite holiday TV specials (RUDOLPH, THE GRINCH, SANTA CLAUSE IS COMING TO TOWN) and some weird holiday programs you never dreamed existed (THE CHRISTMAS SHOES, PEEWEE’S CHRISTMAS SPECIAL, random holiday porn, and more). Pancake regulars John Erler and Joe Parsons welcome their very special guest: minuscule Santa-holic Owen Egerton who joins the cast for all the fun, including improvised holiday
caroling based on your weird holiday stories. Lucky audiences last year were treated to such amazing improv carols as “Deer Hooker” and “The year Mom explained circumcision (I was 25).” We’ll also have an audience sing-along, holiday snacks, and maybe even a little pudding and butter! Come join us at the Alamo this December as THE HOLIDAYS GET
SLEIGHED!!

Sunday, Dec. 13th at the Ritz
Special brunch presentation by AGLIFF (Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival). See www.agliff.org for more information about AGLIFF.
Catherine Deneuve stars in Arnaud Desplechin’s holiday family drama as Junon, a mother who (in true French fashion) is ambivalently dying from cancer. But this isn’t Junon’s first experience with leukemia, her second-born son, Joseph, died from the condition decades before. Now, Junon’s family gathers dutifully around her for the holidays, though family relations have deteriorated beyond repair. Years earlier, Elizabeth banished her alcoholic brother, Henri, from the family and denied him further contact with her troubled (read: “suspiciously queer?”) son, Paul. But in a tragically justified twist, Henri appears to be the only bone marrow match for his mother, and with awkward confidence, reenters the lives of the family that rejected him so many years ago.

Pure pulse-blasting entertainment for only a buck! SPONSORED BY VULCAN VIDEO!!!
GROSSLY OVERDUE DAVID CARRADINE MEMORIAL SCREENING!
A carnivorous prehistoric monstrosity takes roost in New York’s famed Chrysler Building, spending its afternoons decapitating innocents and spraying the city with human blood. Exploitation megalord Larry Cohen (IT’S ALIVE, GOD TOLD ME TO) presents the tale of the Quetzalcoatl, an enormous pterodactyl with a ceaseless craving for rooftop tanners and window washers, which creates some unwanted overtime for winded cop
David Carradine. The only man who knows Q’s secret hideout is the less-than-cooperative Jimmy Quinn, an out of work pianist played to the jazz-scatting, self-loathing hilt by Michael Moriarty. Also featuring Richard “SHAFT” Roundtree as bird lunch. The body count rises as the hideous insatiable beast once again eclipses the sun to continue its reign of terror. Probably based on a true story. (Zack)

Hailed a “cultural phenomenon” by Newsweek and celebrated for years by the likes of This American Life, The Today Show, Esquire, The Onion AV Club, Daily Candy, Entertainment Weekly, and E!, Mortified is a celebration of the strange and extraordinary things we created as kids. PRESENTED BY I LUV VIDEO!
Movie production and distribution is a shady netherworld. The money for films has come from every quarter, from international prostitution and blackmail to Nazi gold. But the most frequently used extra-revenue stream was and is, government subsidies and tax shelters. In the ’70s, Canada had a whopper of a shell game going. Producers were able to make films in Canada and, through a system of write-offs and reporting irregularities, they could turn a profit even on unsuccessful product. The resulting films, international coproductions mostly, are now known fondly as Canuxploitation movies. Not all Canuxploitation films were tax dodges, but many were. I’m not 100% sure about THE SILENT PARTNER,
and I don’t much care, because whatever the circumstances of its creation, it is one of the best movies of the ’70s. Elliott Gould stars as a bank teller who spies a way to steal a lot of money from his till and get away with it. The problem with his plan is that he antagonizes
a real bank robber, who’s also a real mean dude (played brilliantly by Christopher Plummer). Plummer, who has cased and robbed the bank in the guise of a department store Santa, puts the pieces together fairly quickly and starts to make Gould’s life a living hell. But Gould, a chess enthusiast with a mind for strategy, counters every move. Soon
the two man are involved in a real life game with their lives and freedom at stake. The tension ratchets up to an unbearable intensity before the sublime conclusion. Written by Curtis Hanson and directed by Daryl Duke (PAYDAY). With large Canadian funnyman John Candy in a small role. (Lars)

Thursday, Dec. 17th at Midnight – S. Lamar & Village
When we first saw images from James Cameron’s latest $400 million dollar behemoth, one word came to mind- “Ferngully.” But then we were treated to 20 minutes of sneak-peak footage at Fantastic Fest, and HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. All the hype about the groundbreaking technology developed just to make this film pays off in a big big way. 60% CGI, 40% live action, 10,000% fun. This movie is GORGEOUS- you MUST see it in digital 3D, cause if you’re seeing it in 2D, you’re not seeing AVATAR. Worth. Every. Penny.
In the distant future, Jake Sully, a paraplegic war veteran, is offered a second chance in the military. He’s transported to a planet called Pandora, where the world’s armed forces have been put in a fierce battle against the planet’s native species (the na’vi) for years, struggling to mine a vital energy source for earth, which rests under the na’vi settlement.

SECOND FEAST ADDED! Sun., Dec. 20th at the Ritz
This all-day event is an annual Alamo tradition as old as the
ancients…or whenever RETURN OF THE KING came out. Each year we must gather to recount the epic quest of the hobbit Frodo and his merry band of dwarfs, wizards, elves and Viggo’s. We snuggle up together and watch the entire LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY – nearly 12 hours – and get loaded to the gills with food, beer and wine all inspired by Tolkien’s Middle Earth!
Each of the seven(!) courses is served during each Hobbit meal time! By the time the King (spoiler alert!) ascends to his rightful throne, you too are ready to go back to the Shire and be greeted as a hero by your loved ones who didn’t think you would make it all the way…and then pass out. Epic
DISCLAIMER: The first two films will be the “director’s cut” versions in 35mm, while the third will be the original theatrical release in 35mm. The “director’s cut” of the third film was only released in DVD format, but the story goes that by the third film, Jackson had almost complete creative control… so, the theatrical cut is really like a director’s cut. Based on this, we’ve decided to go 35mm all the way through, because it’s just too pretty to pass up!
CHECK THE WEBSITE FOR THE FULL MENU! IT’S OUTRAGEOUS!

FOLEYVISION! Live Sound FX, Dialogue and Music!
Foleyvision features some of the weirdest foreign films ever made,
shown with their original soundtrack turned off. Instead, all of the
voices, music, and sound effects are performed live in the theater,
hilariously synced to the film, before your very eyes (and ears)! Now, the world’s most unique film-viewing experience is returning to tackle jolly old Saint Nick in the most riotously bizarre holiday movie you’ll see in this lifetime! This holiday season, Foleyvision takes on an incredibly ludicrous Christmas movie from south of the border that features your favorite laughing fat man in a red suit versus your favorite laughing skinny man in a red suit. And this time, it’s personal. But when this turf war is over, the only casualty will be your abdominal muscles, sore from laughing for over an hour an a half straight. Watching this movie at Christmas time with the full Foleyvision treatment is one of the most extravagant joys those of us with hopelessly warped minds can hope to experience.

|
Starts Weds., December 23rd at the Ritz
This holiday season, feel free to sit around a fireplace listening to
an old CD of Jingle Bells with your family. There’s nothing wrong with that, and we respect you if that’s what you want to do with yourself. As for us, we’re spicing it up a bit with a bevy of movies that have nothing to do with the holidays, but plenty to do with getting high (or drunk). Then we’re mixing up an aperatif of special activities to go along with each film that makes it more than a movie: high for the holidays will be a transcendental experience! Shows include THE HOLY MOUNTAIN, HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE with all-you-can-eat mini-burgers, BEERFEST with Beer-lympics, and more!

| Ritz New Year’s Eve Bash: THE APARTMENT + FEAST!
New Year’s Eve at the Ritz!
Our second annual New Year’s celebration of classic cinema, cocktails and cuisine at The Ritz!!
2008’s screening of AFTER THE THIN MAN was a true extravaganza,
bringing together an incredible drinking/dining experience with one of the greatest film’s of Hollywood’s golden era. This year, we’re
stepping it up with the flat-out greatest New Year’s film in the world: Billy Wilder’s 1960 masterpiece THE APARTMENT, a brilliantly written, fast-paced, heartbreakingly hilarious adventure of a poor schlub (a young, bumbling Jack Lemmon) who just can’t steer things right to fall into the good graces of the most wonderful woman in town (a young, unbelievably charming Shirley MacLaine). In his way are an innumerable number of comic obstacles, including the great Fred MacMurray and Ray Walston as self-serving high-rollers content to kick dirt in the face of anyone who crosses them.
It’s a gorgeously shot, perfectly constructed, fun-as-hell monument to filmmaking at its very best (in AFI’s Top 100 films!), and we’re pleased to bring it to you along with a very special menu with drink pairings to ring in the new decade, all prepared by our chefs John
Bullington and Elijah Horgan, with accompanying beverages masterminded by bar wizard Amy Patton

NEW PARKING DISCOUNT FOR ALAMO RITZ!
WOO! EASY DOWNTOWN PARKING!
We all know that parking downtown can be a small hassle. While there’s usually some meter parking a few blocks from the theater, driving around and searching for that can be tiresome, and what if you’re carrying a cinder block with you to the theater cause you want to use it as a booster seat? That block is HEAVY!
Which is why we’ve partnered with the parking garage at 7th and San Jacinto and convinced them to open on days they were previously closed, as well as to provide a $2.00 discount from their regular rates to anyone who returns to their car with an Alamo ticket stub. Just pay the
full price on your way in, then stop by the attendant with stub in hand on your way back to your car, and you’ll get a $2 refund. Easy parking, good deals, and all just a block away from the Ritz.
At this point that discount will unfortunately NOT apply on Friday and Saturday, but if we show them how loyal Alamo customers can be, we might be able to swing a discount on the weekends at some point in the future as well. Look for the Alamo sign on the parking garage in the next week or so, and we’ll see you downtown!
The garage is on 211 E. 7th St, Southwest Tower garage.
Big thanks to HOSPITALITY PARKING for helpin’ us out!

Some webmasters try to apply articles from available substance directories to get visitors to their website and make some money. This is mostly large for those who have only begun working as an affiliate for several companies and do not yet have any funding, yet need to improve small niche websites to visitants to their website so that they can start making revenue.
