The Alamo Guide for November 20th!

ANTICHRIST opens Friday at Ritz
THE ALAMO GUIDE
for November 19th, 2009

It’s totally fall, you guys! I know this, because my allergies have exploded with this cold front, it was 40 something degrees last night, AND I GET TO EAT TURKEY NEXT THURSDAY! Oh so much turkey will I eat! With extra dressing and gravy. I will be doing this with my biological family, which, if you consider the other options we have at the Alamo, actually sounds pretty boring. While I’ll be way too full falling asleep staring at the football game that I don’t really care about on my grandparents couch, YOU can be way too full, falling asleep, staring at the UT vs A&M football game that you probably DO care about at the Alamo Ritz! Or you can be watching any movie at any of our theaters, because our annual tradition still stands. We’ll be your second family and feed you turkey and pie and say that we give thanks for you, loyal customer, because we love you.I’m getting ahead of myself a little bit, all of that’s a week away. This week, come cry your little eyes out at PRECIOUS or THE BLIND SIDE, or come get all squeamish watching ANTICHRIST or THE ROAD (opening next Weds). MASTER PANCAKE continues it’s E.T. domination, UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US opens at the Ritz and HEY HOMO! will blow your mind with GREY GARDENS.

Also, this week is THE LAST WEEK to catch WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, ZOMBIELAND and A SERIOUS MAN - so don’t say we didn’t warn ya!

Be sure to keep an eye on the Alamo Drafthouse Blog for up-to-date information and last minute awesomeness!

ANTICHRIST
Opens Friday, November 20th at the Ritz

Lars von Trier’s masterwork may be the most provocative and controversial film of the last 30 years. It is explicit, it is challenging, it is grotesque, it has been called offensive, misogynistic and dangerous…but it has also been called a masterpiece and perhaps the Danish auteur’s finest work. Charlotte Gainsbourg (who won best Actress for the role at Cannes) and Willem Defoe star as an unnamed couple seeking comfort in their country home after the sudden death of their child. While in their forest retreat,
as summed up by the unofficial slogan of 2009, “chaos reigns.”

“What is certain is that serious film people on several continents will be talking about Von Trier’s latest affront, defending or deriding it, finding it hard to ignore. Short of a flat-out masterpiece, what more can movies offer?” - Time Magazine

“ANTICHRIST is powerfully made film. The performances by Dafoe and Gainsbourg are heroic and fearless. Von Trier’s visual command is striking. And if you can think beyond what he shows to what he implies, its depths are frightening. IT IS A REAL FILM. Von Trier has reached me and shaken me.” – Roger Ebert,Chicago Sun-Times

PRECIOUS
Opens Friday, Nov. 20th at S. Lamar

BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE

We don’t claim to be psychic, but we think we can predict with reasonable certainty that very soon you’re going to hear the words ”Oscar” and “Precious” together a LOT. It’s that kind of movie. If it doesn’t win at least 3 of those little gold dudes we will eat a large hat. Get ready to be shaken and moved. You’re totally going to cry too, so deal with it.

Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones  (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want. She’s pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother (Mo’Nique), a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write. Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an inchoate but unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her.

MASTER PANCAKE mocks E.T.
Friday and Saturday at the Ritz

This November, Master Pancake Theater takes on Steven Spielberg’s E.T.,
one of the most redundantly-titled movies ever made (”Extraterrestrial: the Extraterrestrial”). With Henry Thomas (THE STEELER AND THE  PITTSBURGH KID, PSYCHO IV: THE BEGINNING) as Elliott, the boy who
befriends E.T. and then narcissistically names the creature after the first and last letters of his own name. Also starring a 7 year-old Drew Barrymore (FIRESTARTER, POISON IVY) as Elliot’s bratty little sister, and featuring E.T. as E.T.: a croaking bag of wrinkled skin who can’t stop eating candy, drinking beer, and trying to make phone calls. Come on out and see the movie that made MAC AND ME and FREE WILLY possible. We guarantee that by the end, you too will believe a scrotum can fly.

MASTER PANCAKE IS PROUDLY SPONSORED BY KERBEY LANE CAFE!

FREE KUNG FU THEATRE: RUMBLE IN THE BRONX
Friday, November 20th at the Village

Most people may not realize this, but RUMBLE IN THE BRONX helped turned Jackie Chan into one of the greatest cinematic legends of all time.
When he released this U.S.-set action flick in Hong Kong in 1995, he was already the biggest movie star in the world and had little use for U.S. stardom prefering to stay at home to make the movies he wanted to make. But thanks to the bootleg video market his films were gaining notice with U.S. audiences and New Line Cinema, sensing an opportunity, bought RUMBLE with plans for a U.S. release to re-introduce Jackie to American audiences, marking the first time in nearly 20 years that a Hong Kong film was released by a major studio in this country.

Music Monday: TIMES SQUARE
Monday, November 23rd at the Ritz

UNSUNG PUNK ROCK CLASSIC IN IT’S LAST 35mm SCREENINGS ANYWHERE EVER!

Two girls run away from a mental institution and forge a relationship on the streets of New York. They soon link up with disc jockey Johnny LaGuardia (Tim Curry) and form an underground punk rock band – The Sleeze Sisters – who become a hit with the city’s disillusioned youth after broadcasting their volatile songs and speeches on LaGuardia’s radio station. Will the Sleeze Sisters be torn apart? Or will they tear themselves apart? One of the first
teen movies to feature predominantly punk and New Wave music, TIMES
SQUARE captures the essence of post-’70s New York decay, immortalizing
the famous porn district that has since been transformed into a characterless mega-mall. featuring music by Gary Numan, Roxy Music, The Ruts, Patti Smith, Ramones, Talking Heads and more.

Sponsored by Austin’s greatest music store, End of an Ear Records, and Austin’s most essential vintage furniture and decor store, Room Service.

UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US
Opens Friday, Nov. 20th at the Ritz

A feature length documentary chronicling the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-’90s when a rash of suicides, murders and church burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine what heavy metal is and what it stands for to other musicians, artists and music fans worldwide. To capture this on film, directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell moved to Norway and lived with the musicians for several years, building relationships that allowed them to create a surprisingly intimate portrait of this violent, but ultimately misunderstood, movement. Featuring: Gylve “Fenriz” Nagell, Varg Vikernes, Jan Axel ”Hellhammer” Blomberg, Kjetil “Frost” Haraldstad, Ivar Bjornson, Abbath and Demonaz Doom Occulta, Kris “Garm” Rygg, Bjarne Melgaard, Harmony Korine and more.

HEY HOMO!: GREY GARDENS
Tuesday, Nov. 24th at the Ritz

HEY HOMO! is proud, ready and willin’ to offer y’all a documentary film that’s gonna change ya’ stankin lives forever, and make ya’ so very honored to meet such amazing individuals on the big screen. Wrap a towel around ya’ head and haul out the canned pate cuz we’re giving you the masterpiece by David and Albert Maysles that is… GREY GARDENS. What’s it about ya’ say? Picture Big Edie, the 80-somethin’-year-old aunt of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, livin’ in a shit-stanked rundown no-water raccoon-filled busted-windowed cat-infested piss-smellin’ condemned-to-hell mansion in the Hamptons with her 50-somethin’-year-old daughter Little Edie. Picture two of the best documentarians in the world going into the mansion and living there while capturing these two women in their most vulnerable and beautiful phases of a life steeped in enough tongue lickin’ history and drama to make any queen scream and run with glee! If you don’t see this film, chickens….I don’t know what’s wrong with ya’. Join ya’
booya-bangin’ hostess REBECCA HAVEMEYER for a night that’s gonna change ya’ life…seriously kids. (Rebecca Havemeyer)

Terror Tuesday: DEVIL’S EXPRESS aka GANG WARS
Tuesday, November 24th at the Ritz!

The world’s greatest – and only – kung fu blaxploitation creature-horror
explosion! This rousing exercise in 1970s male shirtlessness stars martial
arts machine Warhawk Tanzania, a tough-as-nails/compelling-as-wood afro’ed enemy of injustice. Here, he’s “Luke,” a street-roving equalizer who tires of New York’s rampant gang scourge. What’s a frustrated vigilante to do? Why, import an ancient demon to clean up crime in the ’hood, of course. Shockingly, this plan goes awry, and every gang member in the boroughs is soon on the front lines of the supernatural apocalypse. A masterpiece with no right to exist, GANG WARS offers much punching, kicking, deathing and a man with cartoon eyeballs painted on his eyelids. Featuring the best line of dialogue of 1976: “I’m catching static from some Chinese niggers, man!”

Weird Wednesday: DR. DEATH – SEEKER OF SOULS!
Wednesday, Nov. 25th at the Ritz

This dark, sick black comedy is almost totally unknown but it’s a classic waiting to be discovered. A man whose wife has died in a car accident broods over her death without relief. Finally he approaches a shady charlatan who dresses flamboyantly, calls himself Doctor Death and claims he has the power to bring the dead back to life. The grieving widower makes a deal with the “doctor” that he soon comes to regret. Things go from bad to worse to hopeless to brutal and it gets more ridiculous as it gets more awful. The excellent actor John Considine plays the velour-clad “mortality pimp” Doctor Death with real conviction. It’s a broad performance, but not exactly tongue-in-cheek. His full-blooded approach to the character turns what could be a pretty silly melodrama into something better. Most of the other performers go
about their work with the lassitude of soap opera actors, which only sets off Considine’s fine work to better advantage. If your heart is as black and shrunken as mine, you won’t want to miss this. (Lars)

Big Screen Classics: PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES
Thursday, Nov. 26th at the Ritz

Brand new 35mm print!

Hollywood has provided us with no shortage of classic Christmas films, but there is only ONE great Thanksgiving epic, and it is HERE. No fibbin’…this is the flat-out funniest holiday feature ever made, and deserves to stand tall in the ranks of Perfect Movies! John Candy gives his best-ever performance as shower curtain ring salesman Del Griffith, a carefree loser who takes uptight businessman Neal Page (Steve Martin) on the misadventure-ride of a lifetime.  PLUS, you can enjoy this classic on Thanksgiving Day with your very own, homemade Thanksgiving Feast! “Those aren’t pillows!!”

THANKSGIVING AT THE ALAMO!
Thursday, Nov. 26th at The Ritz, Village & S. Lamar!

Orphaned on Thanksgiving?  No worries!  Let the Alamo take better care
of you than Mom ever did! At every show that plays in the 4p and 7p
round at all three theaters on Thanksgiving Day, you can have your very
own homemade Thanksgiving Feast!  Order the special Thanksgiving Feast
ticket online and you’ll get a heaping plate of all the classics- Turkey and gravy! Stuffing! Cranberry sauce! Green bean casserole! Sweet potatoes (yes, the kind with the marshmallows on top!) Yeast roll! And finish it all off with a nice big slice of pumpkin pie!  Now that’s something to be thankful for.

UT vs. A&M on THANKSGIVING DAY!
Thursday, Nov. 26th at the Ritz

We’ve got a traditional homemade Thanksgiving Feast, open lovin’ arms and THE big game of THE biggest season in a long Longhorn time on the big big Alamo screen! Watch the UT Longhorns battle their way toward an undefeated season against our friends and rivals to the south, the Texas A&M Aggies!

A $25 ticket reserves you a seat and the Thanksgiving meal. A $5 food  and beverage voucher reserves you a seat WITHOUT the turkey dinner but you can then use the $5 voucher against anything else ordered  during the game. If there are seats remaining the day of the game,  admission will be free at the door. Oh yeah, and Aggie fans are welcome too! After all, Thanksgiving is the day for coming together and celebrating that for which we are thankful… and we are all, as Texans, most thankful for football.

That said, hook ‘em.

THE ROAD
Opens Weds., Nov. 25th at S. Lamar

From the multi-award-winning novel by NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN author Cormac McCarthy, and directed by the man who brought us THE PROPOSITION, the greatest (and bloodiest) western of recent times! A father (Viggo Mortensen) and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and, when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing: just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food–and each other.

FANTASTIC MR. FOX

Angry farmers, tired of sharing their chickens with a sly fox, look to get rid of their opponent Mr. Fox and his family. This stop-motion animal comedy from Anderson features voice work from George Clooney, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, Owen Wilson and several more of his best-loved actors. Based on the book by Roald Dahl, who is unanimously considered to be the greatest kids storyteller in the history of our species.

We’ll also be doing a FANTASTIC MR. FOX feast at Alamo South Lamar on Dec 2! Keep an eye on the website for updated info for that!

NINJA ASSASSIN
Opens Weds., Nov. 25th at S. Lamar

The new film from the director of V FOR VENDETTA! Raizo (played by Korean pop star Rain) is one of the deadliest assassins in the world. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them…and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge. This fearlessly full-tilt action film was one of the favorites at Fantastic Fest ‘09, and we now bring it to you in all its most vibrant, violent, vengeful glory!
