The new comedy from Academy-Award magnets Steven Soderbergh and Matt Damon!
What was Mark Whitacre thinking? A rising star at an agri-industry
giant, Whitacre (Matt Damon) suddenly turns whistleblower. Even as he exposes his company’s multinational price-fixing conspiracy to the FBI, Whitacre envisions himself being hailed as a hero of the common man and handed a promotion. But before all that can happen, the FBI needs evidence, so Whitacre eagerly agrees to wear a wire and carry a hidden tape recorder in his briefcase, imagining himself as a secret agent.
Unfortunately for the FBI, their lead witness hasn’t been quite so forthcoming about helping himself to the corporate coffers. Whitacre’s ever-changing account frustrates the agents (Scott Bakula and Joel McHale) and threatens the case against ADM as it becomes almost impossible to decipher what is real and what is the product of Whitacre’s active imagination.
“A return to form for Soderbergh…he is in full control, and his star is on fire.” – The New Yorker
“The pic showcases an excellent performance by a chubbed-out Matt Damon
as a Midwestern executive who’s so smart he’s dumb.” – Todd McCarthy, Variety |

Opens Friday, Sept. 18th at the Village
The most delicious event since macaroni met cheese! The timeless tale has been adapted from Ron and Judi Barrett’s book, which illustrates a world where giant pancakes and pasta fall from the sky as a scientist tries to solve world hunger. However, things go terribly wrong when excess amounts of food overload cities and towns.
Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader), a young inventor who dreams of creating something that will improve everyone’s life. Sam Sparks (Anna Faris), a weathergirl covering the phenomenon who hides her intelligence behind a perky exterior. Tim Lockwood (James Caan), Flint’s technophobic father. Andy Samberg plays Brent, the town bully who has plagued Flint since childhood. Bruce Campbell plays Mayor Shelbourne, who figures out that Flint’s invention can put the town, and more importantly himself, on the map. Mr. T (?!) plays the by-the-rules town cop Earl Devereaux, and Tracy Morgan takes on the role of Earl’s rule-breaking son, Cal.
When you are watching those meatballs fly out of the screen, you are going to want them to land right on your plate! The chefs at the Alamo Village want to make that happen with our meatball specials:
Add Meatballs to Anything! $3.50
Three golf ball sized ground beef and Italian sausage meatballs added to anything you like….yes….anything. Try a shake, with meatballs!
Spaghetti and Meatballs $6
A bowl of spaghetti with house made marinara, parmesan cheese and three ground beef and Italian sausage meatballs. Served with a side of garlic bread. |

Opens Friday, Sept. 18th at the Ritz
Metal never dies. At fourteen years old, best friends Lips and Robb Reiner made a pact to rock together forever. Their band Anvil, hailed as the ‘demi-gods of Canadian metal,’ influenced a musical generation including Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax. Though Anvil never exactly made it, they never stopped playing or believing. Following a calamitous European tour, Lips and Robb, now in their fifties, set off to record their thirteenth album in one last attempt to fulfill their boyhood dream. This is the music doc to end them all. DO. NOT. MISS.
“Lips and Reiner endear because they operate in a bubble in which time and good sense have stopped. Passion, perseverance, rejection, humiliation, frustration – these are the age-old themes of the struggling artist, and the movie explores them with unflinching honesty.” – Chris Garcia, Austin-American Statesman |

The situation facing the pinball designers at Williams Electronic Games in 1998: come up with something new, or see the world’s largest pinball manufacturer be shut down forever.
And Williams’ designers did come up with something amazing: a brand new kind of pinball machine-”Pinball 2000″-that fused video with classic pinball gameplay, preserving what was great about pinball yet opening up all-new possibilities for a product thought to be on its last legs.
Soon after its successful and highly-profitable launch, Williams pulled the plug, leaving behind unanswered questions and abandoning one of the world’s great design organizations. TILT: The Battle to Save Pinball is a documentary that tells the story behind one of entertainment’s most mysterious failures.
Not just for pinball fanatics, TILT tells an account that any follower of technology, design, or business will find fascinating. Seen from the perspective of the designers that created Pinball 2000, TILT is a story about personality and passion, of bold success dizzyingly followed by stunning failure.

We celebrate hair metal every February in our annual LOVE BITES Power Ballad Sing- Alongs, but sometimes you want to do more than slow dance. Sometimes, you want to ROCK. And this fall, that’s exactly what we’re fucking gonna do. We’re not gonna take it anymore, because god gave rock and roll to us and now we’re going to shake you all night long. So yeah, we’ve got the big hair and bigger make up of Twisted Sister and KISS. We’ve got the spandex of Van Halen and Poison. And we’ll bring back more favorites from the Love Bites show, too, because “November Rain” isn’t the only song by Guns ‘N Roses. Oh, and AC/DC. Lots and lots of AC/DC. And you KNOW we’ll be giving everyone their very own inflatable guitar when they sit down, just so we can all have something to smash against the stage when we’re too overcome by the power of our
own mystical rocking.
SHOW ATTENDEES CAN ENTER FOR A CHANCE TO WIN TICKETS TO MANSION OF TERROR, OPENING THIS WEEKEND!

Director Faythe Levine was just in town to present this movie and the response was so overwhelming we thought we should bring it back for a few more shows! It’s an up close and personal examination of the DIY craft scene…and as you can imagine, quite a few of the featured artists are from right here in Austin!
HANDMADE NATION documents the movement of artists, crafters
and designers that recognize a marriage between historical techniques, punk and DIY (do it yourself) ethos while being influenced by traditional handiwork, modern aesthetics, politics, feminism and art.
Fueled by the common thread of creating, the film explores a burgeoning art community that is based on creativity, determination and networking.
In 2006, first time director Faythe Levine traveled to 15 cities, interviewing 80 individual. Levine captured the virtually tight-knit community that exists through websites, blogs and online stores and connects to the greater and craft fairs. Interviews were also conducted in artist studios and homes of the featured makers.

Thursday, Sept. 17th at S. Lamar
Please note: while the movie is free, the 3D glasses will cost you $1. We recommend them highly. Also, due to the technical requirements of showing 3D in 35mm, this screening will be at Lamar.
REVENGE OF THE SHOGUN WOMEN is one of the few 3D kung fu movies. Like most films of the 3D mini-boom in the late ’70s and early ’80s, it really goes all out to throw things at you. The mind boggles. That means you can be sitting comfortably in your theater chair and at the same time besieged by flying hands, feet, knees, forearms, nunchakus, throwing stars, swords, staffs, garden implements, hammers, fans, flails, whips, needles, spears, hooks, arrows, tridents and more. Do you think you can handle all that? If not, better stay home!

Friday, Sept. 18th & Sunday, Sept. 19th at the Ritz
In honor of Fantastic Fest, the Master Pancake boys suck the air out of one of sci-fi’s most dated hits, TOTAL RECALL (1990). Directed by
inscrutable Dutchman Paul Verhoeven (SHOWGIRLS, BASIC INSTINCT), based on a story by master mind-fuck artist Philip K. Dick, and starring lumpy Austrian politico Arnold Schwarzenegger (HERCULES IN NEW YORK, PUMPING IRON) as the world’s least-plausible “average Joe”: Douglas Quaid, a man who really really needs a vacation. The complex plot – involving cover-ups, conspiracies and false memories — is made even more opaque by Ahnold’s thick accent and his tendency to add extra syllables to words: “air” become “eeyaher.” “Mars” becomes “Mee-ah-er-zah.” And two-boobed ladies become three-boobed ladies in this over-the-top feast for the eyes. Join Master Pancake as they “Dick” around with one of the best-worst sci-fi movies of the 90’s.

Guiding Light is the longest continuously produced television show in history (even listed in the Guinness Book). It began in 1937 on the radio as a 15 minute soap, and then made the move to television in the 1950s, continuing as a 15 minute show and then becoming what it is today, an hour long soap. The show has for years followed several families at its core: the Bauers, the Spauldings, and the Coopers, as well as others who have come and gone during the shows long 73 year history.
Currently, the show is home to a storyline that has garnered much attention and a large invested fan base, the pairing of Olivia Spencer and Natalia Rivera as a couple. This has been a story told in the grand soap tradition, start as enemies, become friends and then the slow realization that their feelings had blossomed into something more. The story has unfolded over nearly 2 years, and as it has gained momentum, it has gained fans across the world.
Unfortunately, not even this pairing and its legions of fans could save the show from cancellation and CBS decided on April 1st that Guiding Light would cease airing on September 18th. So, we wish to say farewell to this epic show in grand Alamo fashion! We are having this event as a way to bring the fans together for one last night. We will
be offering a special menu developed in honor of Olivia and Natalia’s love. So please come out and join us for this amazing historical television show.
Like all of our TV at the Alamo parties, you can purchase a $5 voucher that is good towards your food and beverage cost, or you can push your luck and get a free ticket at the box office the night of this show. If I were you, I’d stick with the voucher, otherwise the parking lot is gonna be its own little drama fest on Friday night. |

A couple of years back we showed the movie TOMMY and had Austin’s own Accidental Arts Ensemble out to play a few songs beforehand. With all due respect to the Ken Russell film, when it started the energy in the room took a nosedive – because the band destroyed. We’ve always wanted to have them out to perform the rest of TOMMY. Well, now’s the time. This September the AAE will shred on the original and best Rock Opera of all time.
No movie, just music. See you there. The Accidental Arts Ensemble
consists of current and former members of The Palm School Choir, Lions, the Rockland Eagles, Michael Clay Band, The Polyphonic Spree, Low Line Caller, and more.

Ladies and Gentlemen, THE BEATLES!
Rock Band revolutionized interactive video games in the best way
imaginable and now the game mentors a whole new generation of
ripped-shirt, fist-pumping rock stars…but now an older, suit ‘n tie
generation is putting us all in our place- BEATLES ROCK BAND MANIA has arrived! The Fab Four like you’ve never seen them, and what’s even better, you are them! Featuring beautifully remastered Beatles classics and a psychedelic journey through their eight year rise to rock ‘n roll God-dom. Step into the shoes of John, Paul, George and/or Ringo and
embrace the shrilling adoration from millions of your obsessed fans. Recreate the Ed Sullivan debut or wail Don’t Let Me Down atop the Apple Studios in London, it’s all there!
To celebrate the release of this milestone in Beatlemania, we’re having the first ever BEATLES ROCK BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS! You’re already playing at home, perfecting your Liverpudlian accents and screaming about blisters on your fingers- now you can show off what you got live at the Alamo Ritz. Put together your own Beatles band and compete for prizes and glory.
Here’s the gist of how it works: Put together a band of four people (must be a Fab-Foursome!). Call yourself The Beatles. Get some costumes, practice your song, and sign up. (Fair warning, “Beatles” costumes (any era) and showmanship will be taken into account along with technical proficiency.). That’s about it. Teams can sign up at the theater before the show, but to guarantee your spot email us with your song choice. NO duplicate songs allowed. We’ll have judges watching for technicality, showmanship and general Eggman-ness. At the end, the audience will determine the best Beatles of the night, and that group will be crowned the Greatest Faux-Beatles Austin Has Ever Seen.
ROCK BAND CHAMPIONSHIP FAQ’S
Is there a game setting requirement? Does the song have to be set to Expert or can it be set to any level?
It can be set to any level, but the judges will be more impressed with expert performances than easy ones.
When the band actually plays on stage, will it be played on an XBox or PS3?
To keep it simple and to minimize the downtime between sets, we are only going to have ONE platform, XBOX, and we’ll be playing with stock instruments. We are not allowing instrument swaps from here on out. The system will be calibrated before the show.
Does the band get to pick their own songs during the competition?
Yes. But we are not allowing duplicate songs. |

“Gogol Bordello is a collective, musically and politically. We
create an insane party atmosphere to deliver messages of social and political commentary.” -Eugene Hütz.
From New York City’s sensational Russo-disco scene to a non-stop
touring marathon with his band Gogol Bordello, Eugene Hütz takes us deep into his artistic life and influences. The story unfolds over five years, beginning in 2001, and follows Eugene and Gogol Bordello’s progress from underground legend to international phenomenon. Ranging in age from 25 to 50 years old, and hailing from five different
countries, Gogol Bordello’s members share their tales of immigration, of how they became part of the band, and how they quit their day jobs to go on tour. Through music, the film delivers messages of social and political commentary, and captures Gogol Bordello in the act of performing. But GOGOL BORDELLO also goes beyond music, beyond the political, opening hearts and ears to an artistic revolution in a globalized era.

Monday, Sept. 21st at the Village
We’ve been hooked on AMC’s award-winning drama from the opening beats of the opening credits of the very first episode, and we’ve never looked back. The ’60s style, the talk about marketing in a time when advertising was really just coming into its own, and of course Don Draper himself just keep everyone coming back for more and more.
Of course, for us it’s the fantasy world of drinking and smoking and
taking naps in the morning, then going for a martini and oyster lunch, then smacking around Pete Campbell and calling it a workday that makes the world of Sterling Cooper such an enticing one.
Tickets to these screenings will be free, but you can reserve your seat by purchasing a $5 food and beverage certificate redeemable towards your check at the show that night. For premieres and finales especially, we generally recommend reserving your space ahead of time that way. |

Presented by Hey Homo! and Rain on 4th
I desire and love strong women. From the moment my mind could form independent thoughts, I began to realize that this feeling was real. My first crush came at age 4…she had golden skin, dark hair and light eyes, and her name was Fay. In the year to follow, my mom pulled me aside due to a fairytale I had written, where I was a prince on a mission to save Princess Fay by killing Talia, the evil dragon (and my sister). Then we would surely live happily ever after. Even at the age of 5, I was convinced that in order for me to live in bliss, all I needed was to find my princess. It’s innate. A simple concept that took me 15 years to tell my parents. Then came BOUND. It hit the theaters that next year, I watched it six times at the cinema and scooped it off the shelves, VHS-style. Gina Gershon is so smokin’ hot in this movie. Let’s just say, anyone who can have an orgasm on a the big screen deserves some credibility. Jennifer Tilly follows in a strong second. The rest is undisclosed and waiting to be undressed…all eyes peeled on BOUND! (Chivonn) |

Wednesday, September 23rd at the Ritz
FANTASTIC FEST presents an AUSTIN SCHOOL OF FILM fundraiser event: A special NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE of the long-awaited goreblaster… CABIN FEVER 2!!!
With special live guests: Rider Strong, Rusty Kelley, Thomas Blake, Marc Senter, Noah Segan, and producer Lauren Moews!
Following the events in Eli Roth’s midnight hit CABIN FEVER, CF2 picks up with a truck full of tainted water bottles heading straight for the local high school (on prom night!). Fan favorite Deputy Winston (Giuseppe Andrews) is back to stop the shipment from coming in, any way he can.
CF2 take us into a world of that has timeless quality, incorporating elements of modern day, the ’80s and even the ’70s (complete with a disco prom!) You’ll be reminded of the camp of John Waters, the ’80s teen school aesthetic of BETTER OFF DEAD and the outrageously fountainous gore of EVIL DEAD II. In the same way that film took the EVIL DEAD franchise and pushed it into a more slapstick, comedy-based plateau, CABIN FEVER will tear your head off just before you laugh yourself to death.
This one’s not just for horror fans, but for cult movie freaks of all kinds, the ultimate post-modern teen gutbuster of the current millennium. Do not miss it.
All proceeds from this show go to Austin’s most beloved non-profit film resource, AUSTIN SCHOOL OF FILM. |

Watching OFFICE SPACE at the Paramount last winter was an amazing experience, just to hear everyone in the crowd laughing at their favorite moments again and again. But watching it with that crowd did nothing but get me excited for the idea of an OFFICE SPACE Quote-Along so we can all say, “Looks like somebody’s got a case of the Mondays!” and “Fuckin’ A” and not have to fight that urge anymore. The film is a classic and a constant best seller for our private events department, but for some reason we’d never done a Quote-Along of it before. I jumped to conclusions, though, and now we’re fixing that situation. We’ll have special drinks, Swingline staplers, and after the movie we’ll be going out back to smash a printer. I only wish it was the one I’ve got in my office… (Henri)

SPECIAL GUESTS IN ATTENDANCE!
Thursday, Sept. 24th at the Paramount
Director Jared Hess (NAPOLEON DYNAMITE), Jemaine Clement (FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS), Jerusha Hess, Mike White and Sam Rockwell live in person!
This show will take place at the Paramount Theater (713 Congress Ave), tickets available here.
Like much of Hess’ work, a lot of the comedy in BRONCOS is derived from the eccentric characters who inhabit a world that seems just slightly off center from ours. To make things even more sublimely ridiculous, though, throughout the film we’re also treated to several different versions of YEAST LORDS played as almost a film-within-the-film, and watching that story change as it passes through the hands of the various characters in the main film becomes one of the most entertaining aspects of BRONCOS. The absolute highlights of the film, though, are twofold – the jet pack wearing stags armed with rocket launchers that the heroes of YEAST LORDS fly around on, and Jemaine Clements’ outstanding portrayal of the smug, egotistical, and
ultimately delusional Ronald Chevalier, whose scene-stealing performances will undoubtedly generate some of the most frequently quoted lines from any film in the festival.
But don’t be fooled; whereas NAPOLEON DYNAMITE has been met with criticism for being comprised almost exclusively of little moments of cleverness, BRONCOS fills in the gaps around the Rocket Stags and Chevalier-isms with real plot and, for lack of a better word, heart. Anyone who ever spent a Sunday afternoon when they were fourteen trying to make their own movie in the backyard, or writing their own short stories or poetry, or even just building and painting models in their room, will feel a true connection to Benjamin through that early adolescent dreamer that’s still alive somewhere inside of all of us.
Having that sort of protagonist we can easily and immediately identify with is new ground for the Hesses, and it fleshes out the worlds they create perfectly. (Henri Mazza)
This show is Free for all Fantastic Fest 2009 VIP badge-holders only, all others must purchase a ticket at AustinTheater.org.
Check out Dr. Ronald Chevalier’s Scifiaku Workshop! The winning Scifaiku poem will be read by the good Doctor himself live on stage!
After the screening, all attendees are invited to The Highball for the Brutus and Balzaak Bash, the official GENTLEMEN BRONCOS afterparty. |

Saturday, Sept. 26th at the Paramount
Stars John C. Reilly, Josh Hutcherson and Chris Massoglia live in person!
This show will take place at the Paramount Theater (713 Congress Ave), tickets available here.
CIRQUE DU FREAK: THE VAMPIRE’S ASSISTANT, based on the popular series of books by Darren Shan, is a fantasy-adventure about a teenager who unknowingly breaks a 200-year-old truce between two warring factions of vampires. Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares.
16-year-old Darren (Chris Massoglia) was like most kids in his suburban neighborhood. He hung out with his best friend Steve (Josh Hutcherson), got decent grades and usually stayed out of trouble. But when he and his buddy stumble upon a traveling freak show, things begin to change inside Darren. That’s the exact moment when a vampire named
Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) turns him into something, well, bloodthirsty.
Newly undead, he joins the Cirque Du Freak, a touring sideshow filled with monstrous creatures from a snakeboy and a wolfman to a bearded lady (Salma Hayek) and a gigantic barker (Ken Watanabe). As Darren flexes his newfound powers in this dark world, he becomes a treasured pawn between the vampires and their deadlier counterparts. And while trying to survive, one boy will struggle to keep their brewing war from devouring what’s left of his humanity.

The Alamo’s New Team-Building Event, perfect for all of your not-quite-built teams.
We’ve been spreading the word about our newest private event – the Downtown Austin Photo Scavenger Hunt – for a few months now. But when we started promoting the event as something we had available for your company or group, I hadn’t actually hosted one of these parties, and so I wasn’t really sure what to tell you about them. Now that I’ve got a few under my belt, though, I wanted to take a minute of your time to tell you a little bit about why you should *really* consider the Alamo Drafthouse next time you need an excuse to get your co-workers out of the office.
Personally, I don’t really understand the phrase “team-building,” and I’m glad I’ve never had to go to one of those traditional team-builder-camps where you have to do a ropes course or trust falls. But I do hang out with my co-workers both at the office and at the
theater (which is pretty much my social life anyway), and I know that spending that kind of time together helps us when we’re going through the rigamoral of programming 11 screens, trying to make the new year of Fantastic Fest even more kick ass than the last one, and creating a lot of other awesome series.
So after years of corporate clients asking us for “team-building” events, I finally realized that if hanging out at the Alamo can be credited with a lot of our success, maybe if we created an interactive way to hang out at the Alamo then other companies could start being a little bit more like this one. And this one, trust me, is pretty bad ass. So I created the current version of the Downtown Austin Photo Scavenger Hunt with that in mind, and here are just a few of the reasons I think you should get a group together and have a party with us.
